We've decided as a family to take some time at the end of each day to journal about what we want to remember about the day. Here's what we came up with on May 4, 2012:
Things we want to remember about today...
The main thing was when Ben came back from grocery shopping and realized that he no longer had his iPad. It was a horrible moment.
Brooke remembers "toe-flossing" after going to the beach.
Sophia remembers not wanting to leave the tide pool. She and Marin were throwing mussel shells into the water.
Marin remembers learning about the shark flags - green (no sharks), black (water is cloudy and it is hard to tell whether sharks are present), red (a shark has been spotted recently), and white (a shark is present, stay out of the water)
Ben remembers a delicious chicken and bacon Caesar salad at a restaurant called Tribeca. The restaurant boasted free wi-fi but did not have it for the first half hour we were there.
Brooke remembers her first South African mocha at Tribeca.
Marin and Sophia remember playing at the town park in Kalk Bay, including playing tag with mommy and daddy and going on the teeter totter (according to Sophia, it is called a "see saw").
Ben remembers talking for awhile to Aobert from Zimbabwe, who's first language is Shona.
Now for the iPad story. Ben and Sophia went to Pik and Pay in Fish Hoek to get more groceries. Ben brought the iPad because he had created a grocery list on the reminders ap. Everything was fine until check out. They ran Ben's card 4 times, each time resulting in the instructions "Do Not Honour". Finally, Ben paid with cash. There were too many groceries to carry, so Ben asked if a store employee would accompany him to his car to retrieve the cart (trolley). Someone did accompany him to the car. Ben loaded the groceries and Sophia into the car. A half an hour later back at the apartment, Ben realized with horror that the iPad was nowhere to be found. Moments of freaking out and crying ensued. Finally, Marin agreed to accompany Ben back to Pik and Pak. When the arrived, Ben went up to the manager's station and started to say, "Are you the store manager? Could I talk with you?" when he realized his iPad was sitting on the manager's desk. "That's mine," he said. "One of our trolley girls found it," he said. "Which one?" I asked. "That one," he replied. I went over to her and said, "Were you the one who found this?" "Yes," she said. "Thank you so much. You don't know how grateful I am. Can I give you a tip?" She shrugged. I asked her supervisor and he said yes. I gave her R200 and repeated how much I appreciated her doing that. I told her I would pay it forward. When Marin and Ben reached the street, they hugged. This was quite a relief.
What an awesome story! Keep writing. I feel like I am reading an awesome travel book!
